The doors are in the museum.

The burials were either cremated or reinterred elsewhere in the town (over 1000 i think)

A lot if gravestones are used in the paths and floors in/around the church

Hi

Does anyone know where to find the records of what happened to those buried at St. James? I am looking for a relative buried there in 1901.

Many thanks

Chris

The pictures were absolutely stunning ones. I don't know much about St James and those buried there. I am searching for the book named Dover's Tidy Ruin as suggested in the previous post. I would like to have some more information about it. Thanks in advance.

Not got the info with me at work, but it is Dover's Tidy Ruin by Doug Welby. They have it at the library and occasionally seen at the bookshop opposite the Town Hall.

Hello Chris,

Regarding records of burials of St James parish, the early burials were in churchyard and then after the St James Cemetery was started they were there.
All burials would be listed in St James church burial records, Dover Library have some of these on film, the old records are at Canterbury archives.
Other sources of information would be:

DOVER LIBRARY: doverlibrary@kent.gov.uk
Many Dover Corporation and Borough records (originals are at E.Kent Archives at Whitfield or Maidstone County Archives), are on film at Dover Reference Library, and include:
Newspapers (see above item “Newspapers)
Dover Freemen: Roll (from c.1600), (index only from 1664)
Dover Apprentice Enrolments: Some (not all) are on film, records date from c.1590 to c.1890,
Census 1841-1901 (for Dover District Council area), etc.
Other Dover records at the library include lists of memorials including those formerly in old St James chuchyard, and old St Martins churchyard,
before these burial grounds were cleared. Also list of memorials in St Marys churchyard, Cowgate Cemetery, and St Marys church interior.
There are many other sources for information at Dover Reference Library including transcripts, maps, poll books, directories, photographs,
there is also the transcript (with index) of St Marys parish registers of baptisms, marriages, and burials up to c.1840, etc. etc.

cemetery records from:
BURIALS IN DOVER CEMETERIES:
Dover Cemetery Department are very helpful, their records are all indexed. They also hold copies of some Dover churchyard memorial listings.
Their e-mail address is on the following website: www.doverdc.co.uk/burials__cemeteries/cemetery_locations.aspx
They can find burials in Dover (several cemeteries) relating to any families.
Cowgate Cemetery (St Marys parish:)see www.doversociety.org/Cowgate.html
Dover Reference library have transcript of Cowgate cemetery memorials lists.

Hope that will help.
