Please have a look at this very interesting short article on Romano-British Thanet, it makes for very interesting reading:

http://www.roman-bri...ces/tanatus.htm

Apparantly in the 'Ravenna Cosmology', a 7th century list of towns and places in the Roman Empire, there is mention of the place name 'TANATUS' which has, of course, been identified as Thanet. The etymology of Tanatus has been linked with the Celtic teine (fire), and arth (height), possibly implying there was once a lighthouse or beacon there.

Therefore it seems that 'Isle of Death' is not the only possibility. Perhaps Iron Age or Roman cemetaries lie there somewhere still awaiting discovery?

I have a tale of an Iron Age horse I helped excavate once Jeane. I'll leave that one to another day...

You would have loved that site.

Hi Jeane, the girls playing in St James did they have blonde hair. And the tall spirit did you see him first at St James, and then up the heights?:)

It was a boy and a girl at St James with dirty blonde colour hair as I recall.

The tall man at St James was not the same as the one at the Heights. The St James one was not evil, that thing at the heights was!

Thankyou Jeane. I had a weird dream last night about two blonde girls, it was a lovely day at st James and they were picking flowers, and chasing one another around the church yard looked like they were really enjoying themselves. And the back of the church, did you seem to pick up a lot from there? Such as worser strange feelings?

The area near the alter and the back right hand side seemed better than the back and left hand side. Those areas seemed very sad to me. A great sense of loss.

Yes when i was younger and visit there i certainly felt horrible to the back left hand side. And the woman who had al lost one, had dark hair. I think she would like you to go back there. The right hand side you saw the most spirits? Sorry if im going on to much?:)

Hi, Just found this site...I love your photos. They are the first I've seen that show a portion of the churchyard. I have 4 generations of ancestors who were once interred at St. James, throughout the 18th and during first part of the 19th centuries. I had been rather upset to discover about the bombings, demolition and removal of the burials...until I visited (from Canada) last year and spend a very happy hour, sitting on the chancel steps in the sunshine. Very peaceful and lovely...in my minds eye, I could see my forebears coming into the church for service and for all of life's milestones from christenings to requiems. I felt very happy to be there and felt no need whatsoever to visit the memorial for the reburials. My time at St. James remains a highlight of my visit to England.
Do you have dates for the photos? I take it some are immediately post bombing and some are during the demolition after the tower caved in??

Thanks for posting Lesley because that made me find it too! My nan was married in St James's and she remembers going there as a child. Lots of the Lewis family and then the Stroud family were christened there. As far as I know if you contact the Canterbury archive they will have the records of St James - I think some might be at St Marys....not sure why I think that but I do!

Hi all

I know this is an old thread but I am trying to find out who owns St James and what will happen with the site with regards to the future regeneration prospects at the town. We have been told it was given as a gift to the town as a war memorial so I am presuming DDC (nothing on their website) or DTC own/do the upkeep of the site.

I'm asking this because as part of the George Cross campaign we are hoping to get planning permission to do a memorial garden at the site in remembrance of civilians and those in the forces who were lost/killed in WW1 and WW2. As the site was given to the town it seems the ideal choice and money through fundraising will be used to help with the upkeep of the church and the proposed garden. We have been told to contact English Heritage (nothing about them owning it on their site) regarding our plans but as yet we have no reply.

I've also heard rumours the site maybe threatened from future development in that area however I am not certain of this and believe they may just be (and probably are) rumours but we would still be interested in the future of the site...does anyone know how to find out?

Thanks

Tez

It is owed by DDC and is a listed building and will not be affected by the developments.

I though the group had been in contact with Judith Roebuck, the regional inspector of monuments ?

Thanks Paul. Thats good news and I thought that was the case! Alan will be pleased as he thought the DoverPride video showed something in its place with regards to future developments (I've watched it 5 times and could not see what he was refering to however but thought best to check).

I don't know who has been contacted, I will ask Georgette and see what she says, but last I heard there had been no reply.

Thanks again

Tez :)
