Dover Tramways.

    I have been given a book to read today,called The Dover,s Tramways by Robert J Harley,published in November 1993.When I was a young boy there were still some tramlines in the roads and even today some of their depots are still there and in use,in this book are also some very good photos of the trams,it would be great for the town to have them again today,the public from all over the UK and over seas would rush back to Dover to see them and get on them.I will post more on this book as I read it,and I hope you read it and add to it. Thank you.

    Sad to think the only remains are the shelter on Folkstone Road, Hollis Motors tramshed and a short bit of track down the Wellington Dock

    Yes Paul in the book is photos of that and the report.It was 3.25 on the afternoon of the 19th August 1917,car 20 with Driver Bessenden at the controls got into trouble descending Crabble Hill. The tram gained speed,left the rails and crashed into the wall of the Crabble paper Mill.There was 10 fatalities one was the very young conductress Lottie Scrase. 59 passengers were also injured,many seriously. There are some photos of the crash all very sad.Hollis car sales room was also one of the depots.

    I don't think today's roads and traffic could cope with trams in this town. Nice thought though.

    Did you know that Dover was one of the very first pioneers in the electric tramway system ,it was oped in 1897,the main line was from Bucland to the harbour,then a branch off that run along the Folkestone Road up to Maxton the depot up there can still be seen today.The village and it was a real village in them days not like today.was joined to the main line in 1905, and this is true it was by a cross country route which went through private fields.After the very bad crash in 1917 on Crabble hill the inspecting officer said"No paassengers were not permitted on the top decks of cars travelling on that route out of Dover to River.. The last day of trams in Dover was the lastday of year in 1936.

    Australian City's....put trams to good use, even with the busy car and general traffic......Melbourne is a beautiful city, and uses trams throughout......It runs a free service, Tram 55, which takes visitors etc.....all around the City.....no charge

    I am surprised Dover gave up the Trams so early in 1936.....they were around in London right up to the 70's...

    Travelling by tram is a delight......It is a great pity we scraped these great beasts for the economics of the motorway and cars.........................

    As I said it would be great for Dover to get just one main line back, it would pull the public it in just for the ride,it could be done even if it just run along the sea front.

    The trams closed on day in 1936 and East Kent Buses started up the following day, so few remains left now
